1. Types of Targets

There are four several types of targets in the Planner application: OKR, Key Result, Initiative, and Milestone, which allow you to plan and manage projects with greater flexibility and detail.

Type of target

Description

Example

OKR

An Objective according to the OKR methodology, this is a big and ambitious goal. An OKR is to be formulated as a short sentence, understandable for the entire team. The grade of achieving this goal

Objective

Ambitious, qualitative descriptions of what you want to achieve. Answers the question: Where do we need to go to achieve the desired goal?

Should be:

  • Formulated as a short sentence.

  • Understandable for the entire team, inspirational, and engaging.

  • Aligned with an organization’s strategic goals.

  • Realistic. Challenging but attainable.

  • Time framed.

  • Measurable. The grade for achieving Objective is measured by Key Results

.

Increase

system performance.

the company revenue by 10% in the next two quarters

Key Result

A desired result after performing a series of actions. Reaching the result, you can understand how much the OKR is accomplished. Key

Set of metrics that measure your progress towards the objective. Answers the question: How do I know that I am getting to Objective?

The key result can be measured by

percent

the per cent or quantity of something.

Increase the ability for users to work simultaneously by 15%

Info

Progress of a Key Result directly affects progress
of a parent Objective

  • Employ five salespeople to help out the sales department

  • Sell over 1,000 units of products monthly

.

Initiative

A small

Small goal or a specific action you need to do

for achieving

to achieve a small goal (other Initiative), Key Result or bigger goal (

OKR

Objective).

Info

Please, pay attention, that at the moment
progress of an Initiative doesn’t affect progress
of a Key Result/Objective

Perform regression testing to identify critical errors.

Milestone

A scheduled

Scheduled end date, when the planned goals and results are to be achieved.

Info

Please, pay attention, that at the moment
progress of a Milestone doesn’t affect progress
of a Key Result/Objective

Release on Prod

Capability

Activity or ability that enables an organization to achieve specific goals or objectives

Financial Management

Epic

Large amount of work that encompasses multiple smaller work items, known as Features, Stories, or Tasks, which collectively contribute to a significant aspect of a project.

Epics often represent high-level objectives or significant deliverables and are broken down into manageable parts that can be completed over several iterations or sprints

User Account Management

Feature

High-level functionality or service that delivers significant value to the end user. It represents a set of capabilities that fulfill specific user needs and is often a part of a larger product or system

User Authentication

Story

Simple and concise description of a functionality from the perspective of the end user. It captures who the user is, what they want to achieve, and why it is important.

The structure of User Story is:

As a <User> I want to <description of an action or a possibility> so that <purpose/desired outcome>

As a user, I want to reset my password so that I can regain access to my account if I forget my password.

Task

Specific piece of work that needs to be completed to accomplish a Story, Feature, or Bug.

Planned release 29.03.2022

Tasks are usually assigned to team members and have more detailed steps or instructions

Design password reset UI: Create wireframes and design the user interface for the password reset functionality, ensuring it is user-friendly and accessible

Bug

Error, flaw, or unintended behavior in the software that needs to be fixed. Bugs can affect usability, performance, security, or other aspects of the application

Password reset link not working: When users click the password reset link in the email, they are redirected to a 404 error page instead of the password reset form

Here’s how you can use them:

  • Strategy: Continue to set and track your objectives, key results, and initiatives.

  • Roadmap: Plan long-term capabilities and break them down into epics, features, and milestones to get a clear overview of your project’s progress and dependencies.

  • Delivery: Manage day-to-day tasks, user stories, and bug fixes to ensure smooth project execution.

2. Types of Relationships

In the Planner application, there are two types of links.relationships:

...

Type of Link

Description

Type of Relationship

Hard link

How to Use

Parent-Child

  • Targets become dependent on each other, and a period of a parent target includes periods of all child targets.

Change
  • The change of

one
  • a child target's period leads to

the
  • a change in

the other connected targets.
  • Parent-Child

  • Dependencies (Time Dependencies)

Soft link

  • Targets are independent on each other.

  • Change of one target doesn't lead to the change in the other connected targets.

This type shows that the work for achieving common results is performed at the same area.

  • Contribution (Contributes by)

  • Contributes to

This section describes types of relationship for a hard link in more details.

2.1.1 Parent-Child Relationship

This type of relationship is available for OKR → Key ResultInitiative → Initiative, Milestone → Initiative, and Initiative → Milestone.

Info

The parent-child relationship can be applied to the targets that belong to the same unit.

...

Constraints of parent-child relationship

  • a parent target's period.

  • A target can have only 1 parent at the moment

  • To set a parent, use “Contributes to” field.

Info

Please, pay attention, that multiple values are available in “Contributes to” field. But you can choose as a parent only 1 target. It will inherit progress & period from the child targets. Other targets in the field will be just linked without any time-dependency.

  • To set a child, use “Includes” table

Dependencies (Start/Finish)

  • Targets are dependent in start/finish. See 2.1.1 Dependencies (Start/Finish)

  • Connect one target to another via Gantt Chart

  • or add a Dependency via Time Dependency table in Full View

2.1 Parent-Child

...

Constraints of the parent-child relationship:

  • An Objective target cannot have a parent target. Only Key Results can be children to an Objective.

  • A Key Result target cannot have child targets.

  • Initiatives and Milestones can have as many nested levels of targets as you need. Each parent target inherits the progress of child targets.

Info

The parent-child relationship can be applied to the targets that belong to the same unit.

2.1.

...

1 Dependencies (

...

Start/Finish)

There are four-time dependencies:

Dependency

Description

Finish to start

The linked target must be started

in

on the same day when the main target is finished

Start to finish

The linked target must be finished

in

on the same day when the main target is started

Finish to finish

Both linked targets must be finished

in

on the same day

Start to start

Both linked targets must be started

in

on the same day

Info

When you move a target that have has any time dependencies, the system moves linked targets in order to save the correct time dependency.

This section describes types of relationship for a soft link in more details.

Info

Both the Contribute To and Contribute By types of relationship are available for targets in different units.

2.2.1 Contributes To Relationship

The Contributes To type of relationship is available for such types of targets as:

  • OKR OKR;

  • Initiative or Milestone OKR, Key Result, Initiative, Milestone.

This type of relationship shows, that the target you try to link with others, contributes to the achieving results that planned in the linked targets.

Example: You have the target "To set advertising campaign to attract a new audience" and it contributes to the target "To increase the number of active users by 30%".

2.2.2 Contributes By Relationship

The Contributes By type of relationship is available for such types of targets as:

  • OKR OKR, Initiative;

  • Key ResultInitiative or Milestone;

  • Initiative or Milestone ← Initiative or Milestone.

This type of relationship shows, that the target you try to link with others, gets contribution in its results from the linked targets.

The Contributes By type of relationship is opposite to the Contributes To type.

3. Color Indication of Gantt Chart

The Planner Gantt chart uses four colors to display status and progress of the workflow targets.

...

Status Name and Color
